Hunter Barnes | A World Away

Hunter Barnes is a renowned documentary photographer, known for his powerful black and white portraits of often overlooked cultures and communities. In 2006, Barnes traveled to Sri Lanka with the intention of capturing the aftermath of the devastating 2004 tsunami. However, he found himself in the midst of escalating tensions surrounding the civil war and the breaking down of a ceasefire that had been signed four years prior. This trip left a lasting impact on Barnes, and it has taken him over 15 years to fully process it. According to him, "What I experienced during that time has been buried deep in my mind, sealed in a box of film and a journal that I am only now able to revisit." Focusing on the Eastern Province, Barnes documented the effects of the war's resurgence on the Tamil people. In A WORLD AWAY, Hunter's raw and unfiltered memories from the time are accompanied by his own handwritten diary entries.
