Monica Canilao, Xara Thustra, Ektor Garcia, and Elena Stonaker, known as Cuatro Espiritu, worked in collaboration on a mural in Villas Tulum, Mexico, a small neighborhood on the outskirts of a town that is becoming overrun by rich tourists and development. The painting is the tree of life turned on its side in the midst of so much development, corruption, and change. The tree has been pushed over, but remains bright and still grows, just as the indigenous spirits, the land, and the people of Tulum are working to survive and thrive. Like roots breaking through cement, the spirit stays intact and fights to keep its ground as the landscape changes and is stolen away. Depicted in the image are two Mayan goddesses who watch over and protect the history and people of Mexico.
